Charlotte Garrison Maneuvers

What is going on in the Charlotte Garrison? Look here for the latest on our group and its members.

April - May 2007

Can you say it has been a while!!! Geez, I'm such a slacker for not updating this in a while. Well, we have finished a fantastic Boxer Rebellion campaign since the page was last updated. The French player, Eric Cottrell, won the campaign. Definitely a good time, although campaigning is time consuming for the umpire. See the link on the main site for Boxer information.

We have been doing a lot of boardgaming of late: Europe Engulfed, Samurai Swords, Victory, and Paths of Glory. Everybody is too lazy to run a miniatures game, and I can't seem to get everybody to show up anyway. I've nearly completed my 15mm WWI trench system boards. They are looking awesome. I can't wait to break out BARRAGE in the near future. We are due for a rumble in the jungle game with 15mm WW2 figures on my fantastic terrain boards. Hal claims he can run a Sedgemoor game in the near future. Something about 12 peasant units! Ick!

The projects never seem to end, but 15mm WWI, Boxer Rebellion, and Fantasy are on the table. Maybe one day I will finish one of these projects! Yeah right!

I'm working on the 2nd Edition of Din of Battle, which is a Piquet supplement. Look for it to be complete in 2008. So far I've had a great time working on this and have a tremendous playtest group.

April - May 2005

We have been gaming several different areas over these last few months. In April we played several weeks of Europe Engulfed by GMT Games. This is a fantastic game with tons of replay value. Hal and Eric fought through most of 1943 with the Germans having a definite upper hand when we had to pick up the game. Brian, Hal, and Eric all went to England to be escorted around the country by our friend Mark Dudley. We have the most spectacular time. In May we fought a Cinco de Mayo Maximilion game with the Mexicans giving the Imperialist\French a bloody nose. We also fought a playtest of the Charlotte Garrison's Historicon game called Battle of Bolling's Creek using Eric's Guns of Liberty rules. It was another great battle. We also expect to do some more War of the Roses campaign before the end of the month.

October - November 2004

We fought several huge SYW battles, including one where we playtested the new rules from Piquet called Command Piquet. This is a more streamlined version of Piquet with many new concepts. We enjoyed our games. I've been working on my Boxer Rebellion collections and it looks like we will be ready for our first game in December. We also expect to play some Ancients in December as Brian has a new Indian army which will be a fun opponent for my Persians.

September 2004

Fougth several High Plains Drifter gun fights. I believe the rules are near completion with only campaigning still on the drafting table.

August 2004

We have been playing a lot of Guns of Liberty lately which has been a ton of fun. We have Cowboys and WWII skirmish coming up also. I'm working on my 15mm Boxer Rebellion collection, Hal is working on his new game room, Mike is working on his Plains Wars figures, and Mark is working on 25mm WWII. The next few months should be very interesting here at the Garrison.

April 2004

Looks like we are having a Europe Engulfed month! This new game by GMT Games is just fantastic and the replay value is enormous. EE covers the European Theatre of Operations and Africa. We have thoroughly enjoyedd playing it for the past month and we restarted a new game which will take us through most of May. We do plan on doing a belated Cinco de Mayo miniatures game after we finish the EE game.

March 2004

We fought several High Plains Drifter Cowboy skirmish games and they were GREAT! The rules really rock and I plan on running a game or two at Historicon in July.

February 2004

Due to business travel there has been little gaming during the week. I did get to play in a Will You Go To Flanders game hosted by Jim Brokaw. This battle ended in a draw. A photo is on the main page of this battle.

I've re-written some Skirmish cowboys rules that I want to try out. I have entitled them High Plains Drifter. Hope to do some play testing soon.

January 2004

Fought two battles between Ottomans and Austrians during the 1737 war. Both games saw the Austrians have some difficulties with the fast moving Ottoman light cavalry. The second battle saw the Austrians with a commanding lead in victory points.

November 2003

Currently the group is in hibernation while Eric works a deep night shift which doesn't allow gaming on Wednesday nights. Eric is working on WWI trenches and Mexican American War town sections. Hal is working on his stockade forts for his Cossack Wars. Everybody else has been fairly quite lately.

October 2003

I can't believe it has been this long since I updated the site. Lately we have played some Cossack vs. Poles miniatures games using Piquet. They have been a lot of fun. We also have been playing Columbia Games' great new block game called Liberty. I can highly recommend this game. Very easy to learn, but hard to master. Lots of variation make this a game that has years of replay potential. As you can probably tell I have updated and moved the site. We are now www.charlottegarisson.org. Very cool.

On project notes Hal Hood is working on his Cossack stockade fortresses and Eric Burgess isworking on his WWI collection including new trench systems. Look for pictures of these completed projects in the future.

January - March 2002

Group: We have played GMT's new Barbarossa to Berlin, excellent game. GMT really has several great card based board games on their hands. Played in a French & Indian War game at Joe Robert's house. Wonderful figures and terrain. Hope to post some photos soon. I sent Archon 2nd edition off to the layout team. Yippie! Repainted my 1780s Russians thanks to uniform help from Dan Schorr. Thanks Dan! I hope to have them complete with in the next month.

Used the "Miracle Dip" method of creating depth on figures on my Boxer Rebellion 15mm figures and it worked out great. They look 200% better. The miracle dip can make paint by numbers painting look superb. I'll post some photos later of this dip process. Word is that my Persians (15mm) will be delayed by several months in arriving, but my Taiping Rebels will be arriving near the end of the month! Wonderful!

We ran Guns of Liberty game using Ralph and Mike's 25mm AWI figures. We fought the battle of Guilford Courthouse with the Americans coming out on top. My son and my Dad will be going with me to the Guilford Courthouse reenactment on March 15th. I'm looking forward to seeing about 300 reenactors fight it out on the battlefield.

Time to start preparing my projects for Historicon. I'll post my Historicon plans in the near future.

December 2002

Group: Well it has been quite a while since I have updated this website. Sorry for being so lax! As a group we have still been doing lots of gaming, with recent Vendee, Colonial, Victory(board game), Reds(board game), and numerous other games. The future looks bright here at the Charlotte Garisson for 2003. We will be heading off to Siege of Augusta miniatures convention in mid-January and look to meet up with some friends in the region along with playing a couple of games.

Eric Burgess: Nearly finished with Archon 2.0 edition. Shotting for a release date of July 2003. I'm also sending off my Taiping Rebellion figures to finishh being painted. I should have my first project completed in 2003. I should also be receiving my ancient Persians some time in March. Now that will be amazing. In addition to all this I will be playtesting the 2nd edition of Piquet's Les Grognards supplement for Napoleonics. I'm looking forward to that.

Hal Hood: Hal has gone Cossack crazy! He is currently working on several projects. Cossacks in 25mm, Vendee in 15mm and 25mm, Sedgemoor in 25mm, and other assorted odds and ends.

February 2002

Group: We have playtested several Archon 2.0 games. First battle was Vikings vs. Saxons. This ended with a Viking victory. The second game was Successors vs Successors. This was a truly great battle with one side winning on the wings while the other punched the entire center out of the other side. We also played Avalon Hill's Hannibal, which was a fantastic game.

Eric Burgess: I have jungle terrain boards coming in from Australia! I hope they arrive intact! Working on my Alpini (from Eureka) and earthworks (from Musket Miniatures). Obviously still writing the Archon revision.

January 2002

Group: The first week was snowed out! This week (9th) we will be fighting a Russo-Ottoman battle between Russian forces of the 1780s vs. Ottoman Empire troops. The Ottomans are secure behind their walled city while the Russians attempt to assault and sack the city before Ottoman reinforcement arrive. I should have some photos up later of this game.

Eric Burgess: Received my WWI Italians from Eureka Miniatures and after a six month painting hiatus I'm finally back and painting! Hope to finish my Alpini this week. I'll put some photos up later. I expect both Reds and Brandywine from GMT games to arrive in January. I also hope to pick up some more unpainted Chariot Greeks and Persians from Roger Dopsel.

November & December 2001

Group: Rather quite months of gaming. We've played several board games: Wilderness War & Thirty Years War by GMT Games. We also fought a Franco-Prussian Battle and Brigade scale game for the American Civil War. We also had a nice game over at Bob's house using the Iron and Glory house rules.

October 2001

Group: Playing Victory Games by Columbia Games. Ralph and Mike are fighting Eric and Chuck (Al Mufti).

Eric Burgess: Continued work on Archon 2nd Edition.

September 2001

Group: We fought two battles for the SYW ahistorical campaign with both victories going to the Franco-Austrian alliance. We also playtested Archon 2 (2nd edition of the Piquet ancients supplement). At least four of these battles were fought. (Greeks vs. Persians, Romans vs Guals, and Successors vs Successors).

Eric Burgess:

Bought a Pacific Theater WWII miniatures collection including both USMC and Japanese. Now we can fight some Point of Attack/Blitzkrieg games with these figures.

Bought Spartan (SPI) and Peloponnesian Wars (Victory Games) board games. I hope to use these for both scenario designs and a Peloponnesian War campaigns. Bought several computer games for mindless entertainment! Here, here!

Bought about 1/2 dozen new books, like I needed anymore!!!

Started writing Archon 2nd edition. Hopefully this will be released by Historicon(July) 2002.

August 2001

Group:

We are fighting our SYW ahistorical campaign. The first battle of the campaign took place at Nysa and was a complete Franco-Austrian victory against the Prussians. The Battle of Bork will be fought Wednesday August 22. This will pit roughly 31 Franco-Austrian regiments vs. 25 Prussian regiments. Should be a good fight. On alternate weeks we are playtesting the upcoming Archon 2 supplement from Piquet. Last week we fought a Greco-Persian battle with the Greeks winning the battle. In the coming weeks we hope to fight with some other armies covered in the supplement.

Jake Molda: Currently reading Oman's Art of War in the 16th Cen. Also reading Russia's First Civil War: The Time of Troubles and the Founding of the Romanov Dynasty. Have purchased pikemen, handgunners and full plate men-at arms from Old Glory, Connoisseur, Front Rank And Redoubt.

Chuck Turnista: Here are my recent activities -

Ordered a bunch of Old Glory 25mm colonials - what else is new?
Re-read Charles Oman's "Art of War in the Middle Ages"
Bought, and started reading, Peter Hopkin's "The Great Game" - history
of Russia and Britain warring over Central Asia
Painted up some 25mm Ghazi fanatics
Got the Cromwell Video volume on "The Vikings" - haven't watched it yet

Bought 2 new board games -
1)Serrenisimo (Renaissance Mediterranean trading and conquest)
2)Attila (Germanic Tribes conquering Europe)
[both of these would be excellent for a boardgames night]

July 2001

Group:

We did very little in the area of gaming in July. I moved to a new house so the gaming room was unavailable. Brian, Mark, Chuck, and Eric went to Historicon! On the 25th we started the process for creating a new SYW Campaign which will run through August. Below is our list of new toys from Historicon and other sources.

Eric Burgess:

I went overboard again this year at Historicon, but is sure was a fine collection.

  • Bought a wonderfully painted Austrian SYW army (15mm) [thanks Jim!]
  • Bought five units of painted Ancient Persians for my collection (15mm figures)
  • Commissioned SYW French 15mm painted (6 cavalry regiments, 5 artillery batteries and crew, and 6 generals)
  • Received 1780's Russian Army for web work. (14 infantry units, 6 cavalry units, and 4 batteries). These guys will be used to fight my Ottomans and maybe show up in an ahistorical AWI battle.
  • Bought tons of books! Too many to mention here.
  • Bought some of Peter Pig's WWI Belgians and Pirate figures (15mm)
  • Bought Eureka's new WWI Turks (15mm) to fight my Russians
  • Bought Freikorp15s AWI, MAW, and Seminole War figures to flesh out my collections.
  • Had Mark Dudley from the UK bring me some Chariot figures: Rats, Undead, and Persians.
  • Picked up some WWI Germans from Feudal Castings. These figures are WAY overpriced. I won't be buying any more of these.

Away from the show I picked up Wilderness War from GMT Games. This one looks spectacular, but we haven't played it yet. Hal and I also ordered a large selection of "Bill's Bases" to remount our SYW collection. As soon as we get them the remounting project begins.

June 2001

Group:

We played a lot of Paths of Glory WWI board game by GMT Games. This, by far, is one of the best board games I've ever played. The guys in the group are really enjoying the game. We also played one 15mm Maximilian Adventure game run by Hal.

Eric Burgess:

  • Bought Hannibal board game off E-bay. Hope to eventually use it for campaigning with miniatures.
  • Remounted, touch-up painting, and decaling my Greeks for the Greco-Persian Wars. Twelve units are done with 6 more painted units to finish. Once that is done I will work on the unpainted figures to flesh out my collection.
  • Reading the 2nd Volumn of the Great War trilogy by Harry Turtledove. Lots of ideas for BARRAGE scenarios.
